Sprint set to release 3G case for iPod Touch

Chris Foresman:

Recently released FCC documents reveal that Sprint is set to launch what appears to be a new case for the iPod touch that would enable 3G networking on the WiFi-only device. Manufactured by ZTE and called the "Peel," the case is essentially a MiFi-like mobile hotspot that snaps on to an iPod touch, giving it a network connection wherever you can get a Sprint 3G signal.
Interesting. More details at the via.

Great piece on Antennagate

Watts Martin:
Every recent consumer electronics product from Apple—definitely the iPad, but all iterations of the iPhone including the initial one—has been greeted with rounds of articles crowing about what an arrogant, foolhardy mistake it is and how this will finally, finally, be the moment the emperor is revealed to have no clothes. And ultimately this is what’s so infuriating about Apple: that’s not what happens. Ever. The critics are eternally playing the part of Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, and Steve Jobs always yanks it away at the last second. Nobody talks about making a “Nexus One killer” or an “HP Slate killer” or a “Zune killer”; Apple’s consumer electronics products become the reference points for their fields. The Mac isn’t an exception here, either. While it’s by no means a market leader, Windows became far more Mac-like over the years than the Mac became Windows-like.

Read the rest. Seriously.

Jailbreak Matrix makes finding the right jailbreak easy

Jason Fitzpatrick:
Jailbreak Matrix is a massive chart of all the iOS devices and lists the various versions as well as the different firmware, baseband, and boot loaders that run on each. You check what you've got against the chart and it will tell you if the device/firmware combination is jailbreakable, what tools you need, what version of iTunes the said jailbreak technique has been tested with, and a step-by-step guide on how to apply the jailbreak.
Jailbreaking: sightly easier than it already was.

Another possible cause for the white iPhone delay

Jason Chen:

Their source says that it's because of the glass that Apple can't easily cover up the light leakage, unlike if it were metal or plastic, where you can just add another coating of material. They also compare it to the Sprint EVO 4G leaking light, meaning that it's not a problem solely in Apple's manufacturing, but it might point again to Apple's pickiness about production quality that they won't let this get out the door.
Possible.

Radio Alarm makes waking up painless

Sam Biddle:

Radio Alarm offers features and customization that far surpass Apple's native alarm, allowing you to set volume, snooze duration, and toggle fade-in for a less jarring wakeup. You can also choose from a variety of alarm sounds, from the classic "rooster" to the if-you-use-this-you're-probably-insane "scream." And if you want to make yourself earn a few more precious moments of sleep, you can set the app to snooze only after being shaken. If you need help falling asleep after waking up to horrible screaming sound effects, the app even has a sleeping aid mode, with the usual generic distant gulls and babbling brooks to comfort you at bedtime.
I'm totally getting this one.

Apple looking into reports of poor iOS 4 performance on iPhone 3G

Chris Rawson:

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is "looking into" reports of iOS 4's poor performance on the iPhone 3G. Many iPhone 3G users have noted generally slow performance and glitches after installing iOS 4 that have rendered their devices nearly unusable. An Apple spokesperson told theJournal that Apple is aware of the reports and investigating solutions. That Apple is responding to the issue at all is certainly encouraging, but their response has been anything but timely -- it's come only after a month of irate posts on Apple's support forums, parody videos on YouTube, and widespread reporting on the issue (including here at TUAW).
Good to know they're looking into it.
